On the northernmost point of Sri Lanka's island, Jaffna operates as the district's capital. It is positioned on the Jaffna Peninsula's southwest coast, gazing out over the Jaffna Canal. This city, which has a population of 88,138 and is situated 396 kilometres from Colombo, the seat of government of Sri Lanka, is the 12th-largest city in that nation. Before 1987, Jaffna functioned as the Northern Province's capital. Nevertheless, Trincomalee, which was briefly created by combining the North and Eastern Provinces, took up that role. Jaffna was designated as the capital of the Northern Province going to follow the separation of the North Eastern Province.
