sir. Ponnambalam Ramanathan Born in 1851, Ponnambalam Ramanathan studied at the Royal College of Colombo and later became a lawyer. He was a charismatic leader who spent his own money to start schools for the betterment of Hindu students. He established Parameswara Vidyalayam and Ramanathan Vidyalayam and strove for the educational development of Hindu religious students.
Appointed a member of the Legislative Council in 1879. In 1910 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly as the first representative of an educated Sri Lankan in 1912 under the Guru-Mackalam political reform. He raised his voice against the injustice meted out to Buddhists by the government during the Sinhala-Muslim riots of 1915.
