  According to the 1981 Jaffna census, the population of Jaffna city was 118,000.  When the census was conducted in 2001 in the country after 20 years, no census was conducted in Jaffna.  However, the city's population in that year was estimated to be 145,000.  Due to the civil war in Sri Lanka for more than 20 years, Jaffna has suffered greatly in many ways and has not developed properly. According to the 1981 census, while Tamils ​​were the majority, there was also a significant Muslim population.  Sinhalese are very few.  In terms of religion, Hindus are the majority in Jaffnanagar.
