 A city in Sri Lanka's North Central Province is designated Polonnaruwa. It operates as that of the district's capital at the meantime. However, the city remained widely known as the historic Sri Lankan capital from the beginning of the 10th century AD until about the 13th century AD. This city was established by that of the Cholas to operate as Sri Lanka's capital and to act as bulwark for Anuradhapura. Later, during the administration of the Sinhalese monarch, the city was designated the capital of Sri Lanka.
