Vimaladharmasuriyan

Konappu Bandara executed Don Phillip soon after he became king of Udarata, assuming the name Vimaladharmasuriya I in his replacement. He embraced Buddhism and governed as an independent Sinhala king. The king Vimaladharmasuriya I the Ganethenna vanquished the detachment which the king Sitavaka Rajasinghe sent to Kinady in protest. The Portuguese next invaded the regions that were governed by the Kotte and Sitavaka kingdoms two years after King Rajasinghe I past away in 1593 at Pethangoda. For the two following centuries, Kandy remained Sri Lanka's only independent kingdom.
