 S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike (1899-1959) was a Sri Lankan politician who served as the fourth Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon) from 1956 until his assassination in 1959. He was born into a prominent political family in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and was educated at the University of Oxford and Lincoln's Inn in London.Bandaranaike was a key figure in the Sri Lankan independence movement, and he played an important role in negotiations leading up to Sri Lanka's independence from British colonial rule in 1948. He went on to serve as Minister of Health and Local Government in the early years of Sri Lanka's independence.
